ANTHROPOLOGY OF LUXURY
“Our basest beggars are in the poorest things superfluous. Allow not nature more than nature needs, man's life is cheap as beast's.”
William Shakespeare Tweet
By using a multidisciplinary approach that delves into philosophy, ethnology, anthropology, and sociology, this course aims to broaden the perspective of economic and managerial approaches to luxury, especially when there is no consensus in the business literature about the definition of luxury products and luxury brands.
In this course, we will analyze luxury from a triple perspective: production, exchange, and consumption. By doing so, we gain a more holistic understanding of the social phenomena manifested in luxury. This general understanding will also force us to think beyond luxury brands, goods, and commodified experiences, pushing us toward more fundamental questions about what constitutes the good life, moral behavior, and social order.
This course is only taught to groups on demand. If you’re interested, download the syllabus here.
